COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - In the last two years, South Carolina has started to turn around a teacher shortage that had reached unprecedented highs.

Educators attribute efforts at the State House to pay them better and improve working conditions as a key reason for the turnaround .

And after what some teachers describe as a productive and even historic 2025 legislative session for education, they want to build off that momentum when lawmakers return to Columbia in January.

“It was good to finally have some legislation that came from what teachers actually need,” South Carolina Education Association President Dena Crews said.

Among the wins for teachers last session was the enactment of a new law called the “Educator Assistance Act,” which reforms the contract process for South Carolina
