MEAD, Neb. (WOWT) - Officials announced major progress in the cleanup of the former AltEn ethanol facility, saying all pesticide-contaminated wet cake has been removed from the site.

The state shut down the facility in 2021 after discovering it had processed pesticide-treated seed corn, leaving behind large piles of contaminated wet cake and polluted lagoon water.

The Facility Response Group said more than 165,000 tons of contaminated material was solidified and hauled to Pheasant Point Landfill.

Crews also finished demolishing the unused grain bin and other structures on site. Additionally, 100 million gallons of treated lagoon water and storm water have been safely applied to local farmland.
