BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Louisiana school officials say conversations about campus safety have changed dramatically since the Columbine shooting, with administrators now preparing for worst-case scenarios every school day.

Speaking in front of the K-12 School Safety Task Force, Jennifer Gardner, assistant superintendent for Lafayette Parish Schools, said her career trajectory shifted after exposure to security incidents at home and nationally.

“I’ve been exposed to things at home and national that changed the trajectory of my career and education as we know it,” Gardner said.

Gardner described handling multiple security threats during her time as a principal, including bomb threats and discovering a magazine clip on campus that forced a lockdown with 1,100 students present.
