LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the last two years, Louisville police have been very clear that groups of juveniles or teenagers are "driving violence" in the city.

“A number of our groups are either exclusive or dominated by juveniles," Josh Crawford said, the new director of Louisville's Group Violence Intervention program.

Former Louisville Metro Police Chief Jackie Gwynn-Villaroel said in October 2023 that Louisville "has a gang problem" and that 30% of the city's violent crimes can be tied to gangs or smaller "groups."

Crawford says, according to FBI data, there are about 30 violent groups or gangs in Louisville.

One collaborative effort to stop people from joining these groups, or get them to walk away, is Group Violence Intervention, or GVI.
