City leaders in New Smyrna Beach have officially hit the brakes on pedal pubs after a proposal that would have allowed riders to bring their own beer and wine drew significant opposition.
The City Commission voted down a change to an ordinance that would have permitted “commercial megacycles,” commonly known as pedal pubs, to operate in popular areas of the city.
Several commissioners raised concerns about safety, traffic, and whether the concept fits the city’s vision.
Zone 4 Commissioner Brian Ashley said he worried the idea amounted to “a rolling alcoholic experience.”
Zone 3 Commissioner Jason McGuirk also opposed the proposal, saying, “For many reasons, I struggle to support you on this, and I don’t think it fits with the vision of New Smyrna Beach.”
