OXFORD, Kan. (KAKE)— A proposed lithium-ion battery storage facility planned just outside Oxford is raising questions about safety, communication, and community impact as the project moves toward its next vote.

The facility — proposed by NextEra Energy — would store excess power generated by nearby wind turbines and release it during high-demand periods to support the regional electric grid.

But several people in the area say they don’t feel informed about what the project would mean long-term.

Mitzi Evans, who has lived in Oxford since 1969, said confusion started early.

“We first heard there might be a solar project, and now it’s a lithium battery storage facility,” Evans said. “When people found out about it, my Facebook page started blowing up with negative comments.”
