The New York Mets suffered a heavy blow in the free agent market at the Winter Meetings this week. Instead of re-signing with the team, Edwin Diaz reportedly joined the Los Angeles Dodgers for a three-year, $69 million contract on Tuesday morning. Diaz had an excellent 2025 season with the Mets, picking up his third Reliever of the Year award. The 31-year-old right-hander opted out of his contract at the end of the campaign.

According to a report by Jon Heyman of The New York Post on Tuesday evening, the Mets are pivoting to Robert Suarez as their replacement for the closer role. Suarez had another solid year with the San Diego Padres, earning a second All-Star selection, before finishing at the top of the National League with 40 saves.
