Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is the number one yield robber of soybeans nationwide. The phrases “Take the test, beat the pest” and “Know your number” are synonymous with SCN awareness and management. Management of this nematode pest depends on first determining whether SCN is present and at what level. Once that is known, the next step is to use and rotate SCN-resistant varieties. After variety selection, crop rotation and weed control come into play. Rotating to a non-host crop and making sure any possible host weeds are controlled is important. A few other tools in the toolbox include seed treatments and the use of an in-furrow nematicide.
