Two women sustained serious injuries when a roofer nodded off behind the wheel and veered into oncoming traffic on the A1. Bryan Storey had travelled to a Northumberland holiday park, Haggerston Castle, for the weekend but discovered the caravan he was occupying was so freezing he was unable to get any rest, a court heard.
The next day, the roofer took a borrowed vehicle to return home and collect some money but, as he made his way back north, he dozed off in the heated Vauxhall Corsa. Newcastle Crown Court was told that at precisely the same moment, around 4.15pm on September 14, a 29-year-old woman was driving a Jeep along a single carriageway section of the A1 near Alnwick with her friend in the front passenger seat.
