President Donald Trump said he will issue an executive order this week providing a single, national standard for artificial intelligence (AI), preempting state efforts to regulate it.

He and some Republicans say differing regulations across state lines could hinder future innovation and growth in the AI sector.

But attorneys general in Michigan and 35 other states have pushed back on the proposal, which they say risks “disastrous consequences for our communities.”

“AI will cause tidal waves in our public safety, national security, economy and health,” they wrote in a letter to Congress, “and the United States needs to be ready to be an international leader. This moratorium would put us behind by tying states’ hands and failing to keep up with the technology.”
