A federal judge on Dec. 10 blocked President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles and ordered Gov. Gavin Newsom be given back control of the guardsmen, according to a court filing.

Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles in June after protests against the president’s immigration crackdown sometimes turned violent.

Trump said federal intervention was necessary because of what he called the inaction of Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Newsom and Bass disputed Trump's characterization of the situation on the ground, saying there was no emergency justifying the deployment of the military.
