An egg farm in California is recalling certain lots of eggs because they may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Vega Farms, which is based in Dixon, California, is recalling 12-count and 30-count containers of eggs that were distributed locally, according to a recall notice from the California Department of Public Health .

The recall affects about 1,500 eggs, a company spokesperson told NBC affiliate KCRA3 . (TODAY.com has also reached out to the company for comment.)

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause illness if ingested via contaminated food. While it's usually a mild illness for otherwise healthy people, it can become serious, especially for young kids, older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
