Lawyers have given their final arguments in the trial of a St. John's man charged with manslaughter following the death of a 71-year-old in 2022.
Desmond Downey, 56, is accused of assaulting Douglas Hunt with a blow that broke his neck and caused a fatal brain bleed.
Hunt was outside Downey's home on Wishingwell Road in St. John's on March 3, 2022 with his step-son James Boland.
He was there to ask Boland's sister, Amanda Boland, for her permission to cremate her recently deceased mother, Wanda Dunphy.
Dunphy had died the day before. Hunt was in a long-term relationship with Dunphy. Amanda Boland lived with Downey. The court heard that she had a troubled relationship with both her mother and Hunt.
