NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Gov. Bill Lee will not be intervening in the execution of Tennessee death row inmate Harold Wayne Nichols , he said Tuesday.
Nichols, convicted of the 1988 rape and murder of a Chattanooga State University student, Karen Pulley, was sentenced to death in 1990.
“After deliberate consideration of Harold Wayne Nichols’ request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene,” Lee said.

Nichols’ attorneys had asked the governor to change his sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The attorneys said they’re “deeply saddened and gravely disappointed” in Lee’s decision.
