Beyoncé is returning to the Met Gala for the first time in a decade, stepping in as a co-chair. And she’s expected to serve.
On Wednesday, Vogue announced the "Cowboy Carter" creator will serve as the 2026 Met Gala co-chair along with Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's spring exhibition, dubbed fashion's biggest night, will take place May 4.
Designer Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz will lead the Met Gala Host Committee as co-chairs, joined by members Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Lisa, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, A’ja Wilso and more.
The museum will also debut a new 12,000-square-foot space called the Condé M. Nast Galleries, named after the magazine publisher behind Vogue, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. The Met recently revealed its upcoming exhibition theme, "Costume Art," which will be first big exhibit shown inside the galleries.
When was Beyoncé's last appearance at the Met Gala?
Beyoncé is set to make her first Met Gala appearance in a decade this spring. She last appeared in 2016 for the "Manus x Machina" gala, donning a nude-colored Givenchy Haute Couture dress.
Meanwhile, Kidman and Williams have continuously appeared at the spring event. Most recently, they both attended this past May’s "Superfine" gala. Kidman wore vintage-inspired Balenciaga and Williams opted for a custom Lacoste tennis skirt paired with a cape.
In 2015, Beyoncé rocked a bedazzled sheer Givenchy Haute Couture dress for the "China: Through the Looking Glass" theme.
She first appeared on the Met Gala red carpet in 2008. She returned in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and has worn Givenchy dresses for multiple years she attended.
"With a career that’s stretched from a wildly successful girl group to a mononymous solo act, Beyoncé has had more iconic fashion moments than we can count. It’s only natural, then, that the global superstar should serve as one of the Met Gala’s 2026 co-chairs," Vogue writes. "Meaning after a 10-year absence, we’re about to get a stellar new Met red carpet look."
What do Met Gala co-chairs do?
In addition to hosting the evening, Met Gala co-chairs have a number of responsibilities including to help shape the guest list and collaborate on the menu and décor, according to Marie Claire. They are often known to take the stage and perform during the dinner portion, which is a non-televised event. Co-chairs work closely with permanent co-chair Wintour, who has final approval.
