WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — Gift cards seem like the safe alternative to sending cash, but Grinchlike criminals have devised a plan to lift the money off a card before it's even given as a present, according to West Lafayette police, who recently investigated a similar fraud case.

"This is not something new," West Lafayette police Lt. Jon Eager said. "It doesn't get reported to us all the time.
