See loyal assistance dog save 5-year-old from blood sugar drop

A dog's superhero senses saved the day for a preschooler.

When 5-year-old Wells Lewis was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, his mom, Aubrie, knew he'd be unable to detect his blood sugar swings for himself. “We knew we wanted a service dog,” she said.

The family connected with M.D. Dogs, a medical detection dog training organization, and was matched with Ducky — a diabetic alert dog trained to smell blood sugar fluctuations.

One day, Aubrie arrived early for Wells’ preschool pick-up and parked behind the building. Ducky had been asleep on the floorboard when he suddenly woke up and fixed his eyes on her — his typical pre-alert behavior, she said. Minutes later, he raised the alarm with a firm nose nudge.

“Even though I had his teachers inside the school treat the impending low, he was still really low when he got in the car at pick up,” Aubrie said. She was stunned that Ducky detected the drop from outside the school.

“Ducky is truly incredible at what he does,” Aubrie said. “He is highly, highly trained, but it never fails to amaze me.”

“We are forever indebted to this wonderful, devoted dog,” she said.
