BOSTON — One of the state’s largest utilities will provide refunds to energy consumers under a newly reached agreement with the attorney general’s office.

Under the deal approved by the state Department of Public Utilities, Eversource Energy and its two operating companies — NSTAR Electric and Eversource Gas of Massachusetts — will pay back $45 million to ratepayers to resolve overcharging claims by the AG’s office for tree removal, pension obligations and costs associated with the purchase of Columbia Gas of Massachusetts following the Merrimack Valley gas fires and explosions in September 2018.
