The Michigan Wolverines were supposed to be preparing for their Citrus Bowl matchup against Texas. But on Wednesday, Michigan suddenly became the latest major college football program to face a coaching change.

And it evidently was unrelated to on-field performance.

In a statement from Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, the school announced that it was firing head coach Sherrone Moore for cause, effective immediately. According to the statement, Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Moore was in his second season as head coach and replaced Jim Harbaugh after the Wolverines' national title win in 2024.

Biff Poggi was named the interim head coach to replace Moore for the bowl game.

Beyond the statement, Michigan didn't elaborate on Moore's conduct, but it did say that the school was upholding its zero-tolerance policy.

There will almost certainly be a legal battle over the "for cause" designation as Moore would look to recoup that buyout. But as it stands, Michigan would not need to pay Moore's buyout at all.
