Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore watches a play against Ohio State during the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025.

Just when it seemed like an eventful 2025 college football coaching carousel was coming to a halt, it has started right back up — and all because of the winningest program in the sport’s history.

Michigan has fired head coach Sherrone Moore for cause following a university investigation that found “credible evidence” that Moore had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, the school announced on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” the university said in a statement.

Moore was in his second season as the Wolverines’ head coach, with a 17-8 record in that time. Michigan went 9-3 during the 2025 season while starting a true freshman, former five-star recruit Bryce Underwood, at quarterback.

Moore was the offensive coordinator for the Wolverines’ 2023 national championship team and was elevated to head coach after Jim Harbaugh left his alma mater to become the head coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.

The move stunned much of the college football world, which reacted in real time as the news broke.
