It’s been a while since I’ve received a call or a message from someone who wants my advice about assisted suicide, but it used to happen with some frequency. I also sometimes heard from straight women who were in love with gay men. These are just two of the many then-taboo topics that were covered in my 1996 memoir First Comes Love , the story of my marriage to a gay man, with whom I had two sons before he died.
With First Comes Love now available as an audiobook for the first time, it will be interesting to observe the reaction of a new generation of readers to this story. On Aug. 20, 1994, Tony died at home in our bed, the same bed in which I had delivered our younger son Vince in a home birth on Tony's birthday four years earlier.
