Investigators found no smoke alarms in a Middleboro condo where a deadly fire broke out Sunday, killing one man and seriously injuring three others, including the Lakeville deputy fire chief responding to the scene, officials said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Fire Services said working smoke alarms were located at the damaged properties on either side of the residence where the fire started.

The Middleboro Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at 172 Ashley Lane just after 9:50 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the first and second floors of an attached condo building, according to the statement. The flames had also extended to adjacent condo units.
