Michigan acting head coach Biff Poggi walks onto the field for second half against Central Michigan at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025.

The wildest college football coaching carousel in recent memory took an even wilder turn on Wednesday.

Michigan announced that it was firing head football coach Sherrone Moore for cause following a university investigation that uncovered "credible evidence" that Moore was having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He was in his second season at the school and previously served as acting head coach for one game in 2023 while he was the offensive coordinator.

Moore leaves Michigan with a 16-8 record.

The Wolverines are set to take on Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Eve, and in that game, they will be led by associate head coach Biff Poggi, who was named interim head coach following Moore's dismissal.

Who is Michigan football interim coach Biff Poggi?

Poggi is in his second stint on Michigan's staff. He previously coached under Jim Harbaugh as the associate head coach in 2021 and 2022, and he returned to Ann Arbor in the same role this season.

In the intervening two years, he was the head coach at Charlotte, where he was dismissed midway through his second season with just a 6-16 record. Poggi was a longtime high school head coach in the Baltimore area at Gilman School and later St. Frances Academy, and prior to his high school coaching career, he was a hedge fund manager.

Poggi has already coached two games as the Wolverines' head coach, filling in for Moore after he was suspended for his role in the sign-stealing scandal.
