A former hospice chaplain accused of sexually assaulting an unconscious elderly woman at a Sacramento County care facility was sentenced to five years in prison.

In October, Arthur Apgar pleaded guilty to four felony counts of sexual battery on an institutionalized victim. A judge sentenced him on Dec. 4.

The assault took place in August 2024 while the victim was in hospice care to pray and sing with her, and it was captured on camera in her room by the victim's family.

The family had installed a camera because the woman had previously fallen in the facility, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office said.

The 76-year-old victim, who had physical and mental limitations, died four days after the assault.
