[DUBUQUE, Iowa] — The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is raising concerns over the use of automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) in Iowa. These cameras are increasingly being used in 48 communities across the state, capturing thousands of images of license plates without public awareness of the extent of data collection.
Unlike speed or red-light cameras, ALPRs continuously record every passing vehicle's license plate. This has raised questions about data storage, sharing, and potential misuse. Some agencies operate their own cameras, while others purchase data access from neighboring areas.
