In a lightning offensive, the Rwanda-backed M23 militia has marched into one of the biggest cities in eastern Congo, ignoring a much-touted peace agreement that U.S. President Donald Trump had announced last week.
The rebel militia captured Uvira, a strategic lakeside city of about 750,000 people, in a dramatic advance that culminated on Wednesday when the Congolese army abandoned the city. It is the largest territorial gain by M23 since February, when it captured the city of Bukavu .
