MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Dec. 10, 1967, soul legend Otis Redding died along with six others in a plane crash on Lake Monona.

Redding was on his way to a concert in Madison, when the plane went down because of bad weather in the area. He was 26 at the time of the plane crash.

Redding was best known for his song “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay”, which was recorded days before he died and released in 1968 after his death.

Redding wrote the song “Respect”, which was later made popular by Aretha Franklin.

There is a plaque on the Monona Terrace that pays tribute to the tragedy of the plane crash on Lake Monona and honors the legacy of the “King of the Soul Singers.”
