Given a lift by cold temperatures and heavy snowfall, Searchmont Resort is enjoying a strong start to a new downhill skiing and snowboarding season. “This is the earliest we’ve been open in quite a few years,” said resort co-ordinator Cathy Currie.

Rehiring of “isolated pockets” of men laid off in the past two weeks by Algoma Steel Corporation is not the start of a new trend, a union official said. The steelmaker laid off about 350 workers because of what company spokesmen termed inventory leveling and market conditions.
