The jail death of a man who raped a vulnerable woman in her own home is to be probed by a sheriff. ‌

David James Reid , 63, died in hospital on June 23, 2022, while serving a sentence at HMP Edinburgh. As he was in legal custody and in the care of the state at the time of his death, a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will take place. ‌

The probe will be heard on May 21 and 22 21 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. A Preliminary Hearing will be held on January 8. ‌

The purpose of an FAI includes determining the cause of death, the circumstances in which the deaths occurred, and to establish what reasonable precautions could have been taken to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.

Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial in nature
