Elderly and terminally-ill farmers are being left in heart-breaking situations as farm inheritance tax draws nearer, a farmers' leader has warned.

Colchester farmer and National Farmers' Union (NFU) president Tom Bradshaw told Essex NFU's annual county meeting that they were making "some progress" in getting across the impact of the tax to MPs.

He was speaking at Little Channels, Little Waltham, near Chelmsford, on Tuesday evening.

The NFU is working with other farming organisations to make MPs understand the real-life unintended consequences of the plans and is pushing for amendments to the policy, he said.
