William Lloyd Garrison was born in Newburyport on this date in 1805 in a house still standing on School Street. At 13, he apprenticed to Ephraim W. Allen, editor of the Newburyport Herald, for seven years to learn the printing craft. As an abolitionist, Garrison supported the Underground Railroad through his newspaper, The Liberator, raising awareness and providing aid.
