MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Department of Health Services still recommends giving all newborns the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, the agency said Thursday.
The move runs counter to a change made by the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which last week decided the birth dose was only needed for babies whose mothers test positive for the virus or weren't tested before giving birth.
Every member of ACIP was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a staunch anti-vaccine advocate who previously peddled debunked claims about some shots causing autism.
The DHS said its guidance is based on firm evidence as well as recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
