MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Dec. 11, 1833, the first newspaper in Wisconsin was published- the “Green Bay Intelligencer.”

The “Green Bay Intelligencer” was four pages long at the time.

John Suydam and Albert Gallatin Ellis partnered to start up the paper.

The city listed as the printing location was actually not Green Bay, but Navarino. Today, Navarino is a small town outside Green Bay with a population of 440.

The “Intelligencer” focused on reporting developments in the country, especially those west of Lake Michigan. However, news was carried by word of mouth, which led to delays for the paper.

Those delays made the printing schedule difficult, with the “Intelligencer” struggling to keep up with current news. Because of these issues and low sales, the newspaper closed after
