As the Washington Commanders prepare for another game without Jayden Daniels after ruling the second-year quarterback out for Week 15, one former player thinks the team should shut Daniels down for the entire season.
Robert Griffin III, who had his own career in Washington derailed in part by injuries, didn't understand why the Commanders allowed Daniels to return in the first place. After suffering a dislocated elbow in Week 9, Daniels came back to play Sunday against the Vikings only to land hard on the elbow and aggravate the injury. Griffin said there was no justification for Daniels to be out there.
"It was not a wise decision. I've been very vocal about that," Griffin told FTW. "I thought he should've sat out longer after the hamstring injury. I thought he should've sat out longer after the knee injury. And then when he dislocated his elbow, I thought at that point, the record of the team -- if they could've won some games while he was out, then you could justify bringing him back because you're playing for something outside of pride.
"Right now, the Commanders are playing for pride. And your young quarterback got shoved to the ground and re-injured his dislocated elbow. He should be done for the year. I don't want to see him back out there."
Griffin's desire for Daniels to sit doesn't come from a place of comparison to his own experiences, though the parallels are easy to notice. Both are black, Heisman trophy-winning quarterbacks who can run and who were both drafted No. 2 overall by the team in D.C. However, that's where the similarities end for Griffin.
"There's been a lot of comparisons between his injury timeline and my injury timeline. And I'm here to be the first one to tell you that that's not true. They're not even close to the same type of injuries or the same situation organizationally," said Griffin, who famously re-injured his knee in a 2013 playoff game against the Seahawks. "I've always been an advocate for him. I think the young man has a bright future. I want to see him out there for the next 10, 15, 20 years as the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders. So he's got my 100 percent full support. And my advice to the team would be to shut him down for the rest of the year."
