MICHIGAN — Mental health issues among older adults are on the rise, with a new report indicating a significant increase in diagnoses such as generalized anxiety disorder and depression among those over 65 years old.
The report highlights a 57.4% increase in mental health conditions among adults over 65, while adults aged 51 to 64 have experienced an almost 36% increase in similar diagnoses.
As adults age, mental health is influenced by various factors including physical and social changes, earlier life experiences, and stressors associated with aging. Declines in physical or cognitive abilities and a reduced sense of purpose can contribute to mental distress.
9&10’S Megan Huiskens spoke with Dr. Namita Yende from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan on how seniors can seek help.
