Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is suing Starbucks, accusing the company of illegal DEI and race-based quota policies.
Uthmeier said the practices started in 2020 when the company announced an initiative to hire people of color in 40% of retail positions and 30% of corporate jobs by 2025.
The suit also claims Starbucks excluded or disfavored nonminorities for networking and mentorship opportunities.
Uthmeier said the policies violate the state's civil rights act.
"Starbucks made DEI more than a slogan ... based on race," Uthmeier said.
The lawsuit asks the court to bar Starbucks from carrying out these practices. Uthmeier is also asking for $10,000 penalties for each instance of racial discrimination against a Florida resident.
