MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a scam that is spoofing the office's main phone number.

MCSO said that caller ID "spoofing" allows scammers to alter the displayed number to look local or even official, making it look like the call is coming directly from MCSO.

These scammers will claim that you need to pay money for an outstanding warrant or for failing to appear for jury duty. MCSO said this is not how the sheriff's office operates.

"If you receive one of these calls, DO NOT send money, do not share personal information, and do not follow their instructions," MCSO said.

The office is asking the community to call (423) 442-5002 if they receive a scam call. This number will take them directly to the detective division.
