COLUMBUS, Ohio—After years of repeatedly announcing postponements of scheduled executions in Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine has now scheduled a new death-penalty announcement for next month: one about his stance on capital punishment itself.
“I’m going to spend a little time at Christmas writing my statement,” DeWine told reporters at the Ohio governor’s mansion on Thursday. “We’ll be talking to you in January.”
The Greene County Republican, who’s leaving office after next year, didn’t offer more details about what the announcement would entail. But he said last week that he would disclose his position on the death penalty “in the not-too-distant future.”
