Dozens of people in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza on Thursday gathered to watch the Palestinian soccer team play Saudi Arabia in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 quarter-final.
The Palestinian team, which made it to the quarterfinals for the first time, ended up losing to Saudi Arabia 2-1.
It was a difficult loss for Palestinians in Gaza, who were already battling difficult weather conditions, two months after a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas first took hold.
Overnight, rain drenched Gaza’s tent camps and dropping temperatures chilled Palestinians huddling inside them as winter storm Byron descended on the war-battered territory, showing how two months of a ceasefire have failed to sufficiently address the spiraling humanitarian crisis there.
Aid groups say not enough shelter materials are getting into Gaza during the truce.
Figures recently released by Israel's military suggest it hasn't met the ceasefire stipulation of allowing 600 trucks of aid into Gaza a day, though Israel disputes that finding.
There are also questions about when and how the ceasefire will progress.
Israel is demanding Palestinian militants return the remains of the final hostage, Ran Gvili, from Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Wednesday that Gvili’s return was a condition of moving to the second phase of the ceasefire.
