AUGUSTA, Ga. - The city of Augusta is providing residents with safety tips to help them stay warm during the winter months.

City officials recommend keeping heat sources at least 3 feet away from furniture and drapes to prevent fires.

Residents should prepare an emergency kit with at least three days worth of supplies, according to the city. Officials also advise insulating homes and ensuring doors and windows are properly sealed.

For those needing shelter, the city says residents can go to the Salvation Army, Augusta Rescue Mission and Garden City Rescue.
