To comply with Oregon sanctuary laws, Multnomah County m ust tear up a key provision in its contract with the U.S. Marshals Service, immigrant rights groups argue in a lawsuit.

The suit seeks a judicial order banning county jailers from booking anyone who faces civil or criminal immigration violations, or deportation proceedings.

Oregon’s Sanctuary Promise law already prohibits local police from cooperating on immigration matters, but attorneys with the Oregon Law Center say the Marshals have sneaked in a few anyway, relying on their preexisting contract with the Multnomah County jail.

U.S. Marshals make arrests on federal charges and in cases where suspects are wanted in other states. They typically house those people in local jails until they can be moved.
