President Donald Trump's latest "pardon" was buried in mockery on Thursday night.
Trump announced on Truth Social that he intends to pardon Tina Peters, a Colorado county clerk who was convicted on seven state charges of aiding a security breach into her county's election system. Some analysts pointed out that Trump cannot actually pardon Peters because she was not convicted of federal crimes.
"Democrats have been relentless in their targeting of TINA PETERS, a Patriot who simply wanted to make sure that our Elections were Fair and Honest," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Tina is sitting in a Colorado prison for the 'crime' of demanding Honest Elections."
Political analysts and observers shared their reactions to Trump's attempted pardon on social media.
"State charges can’t be touched by a federal pardon," independent journalist Alex Cole posted on X. "His announcement is just noise for people who refuse to read."
"Tina Peters, who is a convicted criminal, was found guilty in a CO state court of attempting to interfere in the 2020 election," journalist Mike Rothschild posted on X. "Trump's 'pardon' of her is as impactful as my demand letter to be an NBA All Star."
"Isn't worth the paper it's printed on," progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen posted on X. "Pardons don't impact state crimes."
"She is in state prison for election fraud," independent journalist Adam Cochran posted on X. "This pardon is irrelevant."
