CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - It is Christmas time once again, which means holiday shopping is underway.
It also means this is the time when scammers are looking to steal your holiday cheer.
Sarah Carey, director of the Business Division for the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office, said the reason is that “everybody is kind of in that spirit of giving, everybody wants to help each other. there’s a lot of folks out there who are saying they are having a hard time.”
The spirit of giving is what scammers take advantage of and it can start with a phone call.
“Callers will call you from an unknown number and they will say, ‘hey, you know we are collecting money for our veterans and people aren’t vetting them.’ They will just say, ‘oh yeah, I would like to help the veterans,’ so they will
