Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar passed away today in Latur. He was 91 and breathed his last at around 6:30 a.m. at his residence, “Deoghar.” He had been receiving treatment at home due to a prolonged illness.
Chakurkar served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha and held several Union ministerial portfolios. Over the course of his political career, he occupied many key positions and played an active role in the country’s constitutional processes.
A prominent Congress leader from Chakur in Latur, he won the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times. Even after losing the constituency in 2004, he accepted the post of Home Minister through the Rajya Sabha and continued to take on central responsibilities.
