The Matawan-Aberdeen school district has reversed course on closing its school facilities to after-school community groups, one day after announcing the temporary closure.

The superintendent, Nelyda Perez, said in a Wednesday letter that the Tuesday shutdown action was “not taken lightly” and was due to a number of issues in the past few weeks, including vandalism, drug paraphernalia found in one school building and unauthorized access and trespassing in school buildings during community use.

Noting the closures “caused some stress and disappointment,” they were necessary so the district could investigate and review the use of buildings after classes end, she said in the letter.
