A violent thug who made his partner’s life a misery as he attempted to control every aspect of her life has been jailed.

Carl Stockdale left his victim feeling like a prisoner in her own home during a three-month period of coercive and controlling behaviour where he would threaten violence or threaten to take her dog.

The 38-year-old would repeatedly take his victim’s car to prevent her going to work and on one occasion refused to let her out of the vehicle until she threatened to jump out, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Nigel Soppitt, prosecuting, said Stockdale’s behaviour left the woman terrified that he would hurt her and he would threaten to take his own life to maintain his grip over her.
