A severe weather warning has been issued on the Canary Islands this weekend, with waves predicted to reach massive heights.
AEMET, Spain's state meteorological agency, has warned of a hazardous combination of strong winds , heavy rainfall and dangerous seas.
The forecast comes less than a week after four tourists were killed, with another missing, at the Charco de Isla Cangrejo natural pool in Los Gigantes, Tenerife .
Waves of over 4.8 meters (16 feet) were forecast with experts warning that this was just an average, with swells reaching a monstrous height of 10 meters (33 feet) at their highest.
The perilous coastal conditions are expected to strike the island late on Friday (December 12) and throughout Saturday.
The weather agency warned that the seas on Saturday would be "especially dangerous" meanwhile the northerly winds would be "very intense".
Tourists and locals were warned to follow safety procedures and stay updated on the latest developments via official channels. More information is expected to be released later today, the Olive Press reports .
The news comes just a week after four tourists were killed by massive waves, with another still missing. The tragic incident occurred at the Charco de Isla Cangrejo natural pool in Los Gigantes, Tenerife on Sunday (December 7).
Around 20 bathers ignored an official closure and crossed police tape to swim at the popular holiday spot.
Emilio Navarro, mayor of the municipality of Santiago del Teide, told a local TV station: “All those hurt or killed were tourists. There’s a group that was younger, Slovakians and Italians, and there was another group all tourists, who had crossed the tape that had been put by local police or Civil Guard who have been working all week in this area and at other points along the coast.
“It’s impossible at times to make people understand the dangers of the ocean. The tape has to be replaced several times a day in some cases because it gets broken and people even insult police because they don’t want to leave.”
Three people were also killed on the island under similar conditions in November, including a Dutch cruise passenger when 10 people were swept into the sea in Tenerife.
The tragedy occurred in the well-known resort of Puerto de la Cruz, located in the north of the island and the most popular holiday location in the area.
