KEAUHOU, Hawaii (Island News) – A man was bitten by a shark at Ka’alu’alu Beach on Tuesday afternoon, according to Hawaii Island Police.

Police responded to the beach on Tuesday just before 4:30 p.m. after reports that a 24-year-old Holualoa man was bitten by a shark. It was reported that the man had been diving with two people when they saw a blacktip reef shark entangled in a rope and fishing gear about 30 to 40 yards from shore.

As the group attempted to free the shark, the animal began thrashing and bit the 24-year-old man on the inner and outer areas of his left thigh.

Hawaii Fire Department medics treated the man at the scene. He was reported to be in stable condition and was taken via helicopter to the Kona Community Hospital for more treatment.
