Fentanyl usage is on the rise and the Idaho State Police has trained its K-9 officers to sniff out the deadly opioid.

The fentanyl training adds a fifth drug to the roster that ISP’s dogs can recognize, including heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana, according to a Tuesday press release. Sgt. Chris Cottrell said that fentanyl presents a unique challenge that has been on the rise over the past few years.

Cottrell has been with the ISP for 20 years and has worked with the organization’s K-9s for over a decade. The rise in fentanyl has led officers to use additional precautions to avoid contact with the drug. This has included wearing latex gloves and carrying Narcan, not just for themselves, but also for their dogs.
