A Malomo court in Ntchisi District has sentenced Isaac Kapikule, 55, to ten (10) years in prison for possessing nine (9) elephant tusks.

Prosecutor Dalitso Ng’oma told the court that Kapikule was found with the tusks on the 29th of last month at Nambamba Village in the Chilooko chiefdom, where he comes from.

When given the chance to speak, the accused pleaded guilty, prompting Ng’oma to ask the court to impose a stiff sentence, noting that such offences are becoming rampant in the country.

Malomo Magistrate Damiano Banda said he hopes the sentence will deter others planning to engage in similar illegal activities.
